Overview of Women in Film and Television - Atlantic

Women in Film and Television - Atlantic (WIFT-AT) is a non-profit professional association that connects our members and advances the careers of women working in film, television and screen-based media based in Atlantic Canada. We are committed to creating opportunities for women to grow, discover alliances, challenge stereotypes, learn from the best and be inspired by those who are standing out with unique and powerful voices.

WIFT-AT supports women through the development and execution of programming, communications, networking opportunities and member benefits to encourage strategic leadership growth and offers inspirational outreach to new members and audiences. Our programming culminates with our annual Women Making Waves Conference, a gender-inclusive celebration of the accomplishments and contributions of women working in film and the screen-based media.

Our mission is to grow and leverage the skills, talents, and potential of our members to ensure access to high-quality production and distribution resources; to exert influence at all levels of the industry; and to celebrate and extend the impact of the collaborative nature of screen-based production in the Atlantic region. Founded in 2009, the organization has grown steadily. WIFT-AT has approximately 200 active members across the Atlantic provinces.

Overview of Women Making Waves

Created by women for the benefit of all genders, the annual Women Making Waves Conference celebrates, empowers and connects industry professionals. The Conference is a unique opportunity to learn from industry experts, network with peers, and participate in Women in Film and Television - Atlantic’s ongoing efforts to expand diversity and gender equality in film and television. The Conference is an opportunity for film, television and screen-based media professionals in a variety of roles to come together and learn about the industry.

The 10th Annual Women Making Waves Conference kicks off with a screening of the award-winning documentary nîpawistamâsowin: We Will Stand Up directed by Tasha Hubbard on the evening of Friday, March 6th. On Saturday, the conference will feature a Spotlight Discussion with Meredith MacNeill, a case study on nîpawistamâsowin: We Will Stand Up, a keynote address by feminist activist Sharon McGowan, as well as sessions on writing for the horror genre, the relationship between composers, editors and directors, and line producing. Back again this year are the popular networking lunch, the IOM Media Ventures WAVE Awards Celebration Dinner and the CBC Pitch Competition. WIFT-AT is pleased to offer four additional workshops preceding Women Making Waves Conference on Friday, March 6th. These will include a session on sound design, business strategies, editing, and career strategies.
